The NDA government is paying full attention to ameliorate the lot of farmers and also extend schemes to provide relief to those suffering crop loss, a BJP leader said today.

"NDA government has earmarked Rs 8.5 lakh crore for sanction of soft loans to farmers. Irrigation requirements and also crop protection scheme are also being implemented to bring relief to them," Union MoS Road transport, National Highways and Shipping Pon Radhakrishnan said.

He was speaking at a public meeting organised by the local BJP unit to highlight the achievements of the NDA government in the last one year since assuming power.

The MoS alleged that the previous UPA government had extended compensation only where crop loss was 50 per cent and more and had insisted that the loss should be in an entire area. Individual farmers' woes were not recognised.

But the NDA government was extending the scheme to give relief even when the loss was 30 per cent and even when individual farmers suffered crop loss, he said.

Radhakrishnan said government had evolved a very stern legislation to curb female foeticide. Girls were taken care of in ensuring education, basic amenities like toilets in schools and also protection for the continued educational pursuits.

"Our country is emerging as a highly reputed nation and international organisations like World Bank have lauded the initiatives of the PM on several counts, including launching of the Prime Minister's Jan Dhan Yojana," he said.

Radhakrishnan faulted the UPA government at the Centre for the problems faced by Sri Lankan Tamils during the war with LTTE in the island nation and said the NDA government had made it clear that India would stand in total solidarity with them.

It had also insisted that that the Sri Lankan government not only guarantee the rights of the Tamils, but also extend an honourable and dignified treatment to them.

He said the Modi government was not for the affluent, but for the marginalised sections and the poor. Introduction of mega social security insurance schemes proved how concerned the PM is for the poor and weaker sections, he said.
