North Delhi Municipal Corporation today announced a new health scheme for women which aims to bring services closer for those living in rural areas and unauthorised colonies.

"NDMC will launch the 'Stri Swasthya Suraksha Yojna' on March 6.

"The scheme will reach out to women, especially those living in rural areas and unauthorised colonies, who otherwise do not have much access to health services," said NDMC Standing Committee Chairman Mohan Bhardwaj.

Under the scheme, health camps and mass awareness drives will be held in various areas of north Delhi and medical services will be provided through various nodal centres, hospitals and mobile dispensaries marked for the programme.

"Many women in these areas suffer either out of poverty or for the lack of medical assistance. Women will be examined at the camps and health centres under the scheme.

"We will first try to treat them at polyclinics in all the zones but, depending on the case, we may also refer patients to AIIMS," Bhardwaj said.

"For unauthorised colonies and rural areas which do not have transportation facilities, 20 mobile dispensaries will be provided to bring services closer for them," he said.

During health camps, screenings will be done for different kinds of cancers, anaemia and malnutrition, among others.

"A recent report by the Centre states that in more than 50 per cent of the cases involving women patients, diseases had been diagnosed late, (which is why) we introduced this scheme. We have also tied up with private labs for the tests," said NDMC Public Relations Officer, Yogendra Singh Mann.

NDMC Mayor Azad Singh, meanwhile, announced other schemes which the civic body has lined up in its working calendar.

"Another medical college would be opened at Rajan Babu Institute of Pulmonary Medicine and Tuberculosis (RBIPMT) where 79 acres of land is available with NDMC," Singh said.

"Forty-eight points have been identified where public conveniences for women will be developed. An amount of Rs 2,100 will be extended to one per cent of the safai karamcharis as performance-based reward," the Mayor said.
