NDMC denies permission to hold prayers at mosque ruins site

Construction activity by locals led by MLA Shoib Iqbal was today stopped at Subhash Park, near Jama Masjid and Red Fort, where remains of a mosque believed to be the 17th Century Akbarabadi Masjid were found during Delhi Metro construction.

As people thronged the location and offered prayers, North Delhi Municipal Corporation today said it has declined to grant any permission to any party to carry out any religious rituals till a proper decision is taken.

MLA Iqbal of RLD had also met senior NDMC officials seeking permission to offer prayers at the site but it was denied.

 

Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit reviewed the situation and instructed senior officials to convey to city police to ensure law and order.

She also asked Iqbal, who is leading the construction activity, to desist from any such act and ensure peace and tranquillity in the area.

The NDMC Commissioner directed the Deputy Commissioner (City Zone) to stick to the stand of not allowing any religious activity in the area. He was also asked ensure that no deviation takes place or give any liberty to any party to take advantage of the situation, a senior NDMC official said.

"No permission is to be granted to carry out any religious activities at the site," the Deputy Commissioner (City Zone) was told.

Yesterday, the NDMC has banned any construction at the location and warned that anybody indulging in construction was liable to prosecution as the said land belongs to the municipal body. MORE
