Seeking to involve civil society in cleanliness activities in the city, the BJP-led North Delhi Municipal Corporation Monday launched a campaign with an aim to finish on top in the next Swachh rankings, officials said.

In the last Swachh Bharat ranking, the NDMC had secured the 206th position.

The campaign 'Uttari Delhi Hogi No.1' was launched by BJP MPs Meenakshi Lekhi and Udit Raj.

The programme was organised to mark the birthday of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and ensure public participation and behavioural change towards cleanliness and sanitation in the spirit of Swachh Bharat, they said.

"The real service to the nation will be making it free of garbage and debris, and making the 'Swachh Bharat Mission' a success. Officials and leaders should work in collaboration to achieve the objectives of mission." Lekhi said.

Raj said the 'sanitation-cum-cleanliness' drive would make citizens aware about sanitation-related activities through the use of various mass media.

The programme was attended by North Delhi Mayor Adesh Gupta, Municipal Commissioner Madhup Vyas, other senior officials, public representatives, members of RWAs, market associations, among others.

Mayor Gupta said to make this drive a success, cooperation of citizens is essential.

He said that the NDMC has also launched a Twitter handle, in addition to existing Mayor Helpline -- 96430 96430, for citizens to give their suggestions or complaints regarding cleanliness, street light, horticulture, education, debris-related issues.

He said that all the received complaints will be acted upon within 24 working hours.

Vyas said that during the programme, special cleanliness drives would be organised across NDMC schools, market associations and RWAs.

He said special emphasis would be given on involving people as stakeholders in the cleanliness drive. This would include elected public representatives, RWAs, market associations, schoolchildren and teachers.

Vyas also said that 6,000 dustbins have been installed on roadsides, 12 mechanical road sweeping machines are working, and slope stabilization work is in progress at the Bhalaswa landfill site.

Also, curriculum on 'swachhta' would be included in primary classes and inter school swachhta competitions would be organised.
