North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) is mulling offering a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the next of kin of any dengue death victim in its area.

Top officials of the NDMC said the proposal is being examined and a decision on it will be taken soon.

"The proposal was made by a member of the Dengue and Malaria Committee. It was taken up by the Standing Committee recently and now the same has been moved to the municipal commissioner, under whom the feasibility of the proposal is being taken up," Chairman of NDMC's Standing Committee, Mohan Bhardwaj, told PTI.

The proposal provides for granting of aid to those victims whose residence falls in the jurisdiction of the civic body.

"Dengue deaths occur not just among those from Delhi but there are cases of patients coming from outside Delhi too. People can produce a dengue death certificate and start claiming compensation. We need to look into every aspect before taking any final call on it," he said.

The total number of cases reported in the national capital has inched closer to 100 with one death having been reported till now.

The victim, Rishi Qaddafi, was an eight-year-old boy hailing from Srinagar who resided in south Delhi. He died of dengue on Friday at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital.

Ninety-eight cases were reported in the national capital till September 27, an increase of 30 per cent over the figure till September 20, says a report released by South Delhi Municipal Corporation, which compiles data for vector-borne disease.

Over 5,500 dengue cases and six deaths were registered in the national capital last year, SDMC has found.

Delhi had witnessed a large number of dengue cases in 2010, with over 6,200 of them having been reported. In 2009, 1,153 cases were registered while 1,300 cases were reported in 2008, 1,131 cases in 2011 and 2,093 cases in 2012.

The figures for dengue cases till September 27 under the various civic corporations in Delhi are - 18 (north corporation), 39 (south corporation) and 13 (east corporation). Fifteen cases were reported from areas of Delhi outside the jurisdiction of the three municipal corporations and 13 from neighbouring states, the report said.
