NDMC to hold 'wellness week' from Jun 17; IYD at Rajpath

From thematic street art projects to military band performance and health conclave to workshops on emotional well-being, the civic body in Lutyens' Delhi has lined up a host of programmes for a wellness week from June 17-23 that will also coincide with the International Day of Yoga celebrations.

New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) secretary Rashmi Singh at a press conference here, said that the main Yoga Day event in national capital will be held at Rajpath.

"The objective of this week-long event is to spread awareness among people towards a responsible civic behaviour and to promote well-being, both physical and emotional. The idea also is to develop a sense of ownership among people to care for the city," she said.

 

NDMC area, housing some of the prime government offices and bungalows and sprawling parks, is spread over 43 sq km. It has a resident population of just 3 lakh but a much larger floating population of 16 lakh, according to the civic body.

"The event would open with a street art project, and we have identified walls on Shahjehan Road where where volunteers and Swachhta interns of NDMC will give vent to their creative spirit by creating artworks themed on wellness.

"A military band will play patriotic songs at the lawns of India Gate and a special campaign 'Let's Be an Asli Hero' would also be run to acknowledge people who contribute towards better civic sense and cleanliness," Singh said.

On the last day of the week-long event, a wellness conclave will be held in which experts from several fields will be sharing their knowledge and experiences.

"Popular singer Adnan Sami, who set an example by losing 130 kgs, is also scheduled to attend the conclave. He will also talk about wellness through music. A lifestyle coach and an environment activist from Mumbai are also set to be part of the conclave," the NDMC secretary said.

On June 18, a dialogue would be held to share common interest issues, rules and byelaws of the NDMC, best initiatives and invite suggestions for improving its areas through civic participation.

Senior officials of the NDMC, representatives of resident welfare associations, market associations, heads of schools, institutions and industry bodies such FICCI and CII will participate in the programme.

An awareness campaign on emotional wellness of children for principals and school management committees in various NDMC schools will be held on June 19 at Navyug Senior Secondary School, Sarojini Nagar.

A workshop on busting exam stress would be organised on June 20, 2018 in that school, in which renowned counsellors will interact with students.

On the second last day, yoga session, stress management workshop and talk on personal wellness will be conducted by city-based Morarji Desai Yoga Institute, Gayatri Tirth, Hardiwar and Sleepwell Foundation at Talkatora Indoor Stadium.

"The focus of the event is on functionaries working at grassroots from health, horticulture, civil departments, such as security guards, sewer workers," Singh said.
