The standing committee of North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) today passed a proposal for a general amnesty scheme of waiving interest and penalty on tax dues of lakhs of property owners.

Presenting the proposal in the meeting of the standing committee, vice chairman Virender Babbar said that a large number of property owners have been unable to pay their taxes since the self-assessment system was introduced in 2006.

"The biggest handicaps in the payment of dues of property taxes were the interest rate of 12 per cent and penalty which need to be waived," he said.

Presently around 3.5 lakh persons pay property tax to NDMC. The number of owners of properties in the municipal area is, however, 10 lakh and most of them do not pay taxes, he said.

The large sum of accumulated interest and penalty over the years prevent the defaulters to settle their dues and the amnesty scheme is likely to encourage them to pay pending taxes, he said.

The amnesty scheme approved by the standing committee will waive interest and penalty on property tax dues if paid by March 31. The property owners who have approached courts with regard to property tax will also be covered under the scheme.
