Demanding an end to discrimination against those from the North-East, students from the region today staged a candle-light march protesting against the death of an Arunachal student who was allegedly beaten up by Delhi shopkeepers.
More than 250 students from all parts of the north-east protested by holding placards, raising slogans against discrimination and demanded justice to the dead student.
Arunachal Students Union general secretary Keny Borang told PTI, "Those who are guilty in the case should be punished according to the law. We also demand an end to discrimination against those from the northeast. The government must ensure that such incidents should not happen in future."
A 19-year-old Arunachalee student Nido Tania, son of a Congress MLA, died after being allegedly beaten up by some shopkeepers in Delhi following a quarrel sparked by their taunts on his hairstyle.
Naga Students' Union president Ikoto Yeptho said, "We participated to show solidarity towards a youngster from our region".
The youngsters shouted slogans like 'Enough is enough' and carried placards saying 'We want justice'. They walked a 3 km stretch from Arunachal Bhawan in Salt Lake.
Alex Rosangluaia of Mizoram Students Union said during the rally some student leaders affiliated to political parties tried to join them but they politely told them to not politicise the issue.
"We don't want any politics in this. It is a movement for us to end discrimination against us. We will write to the prime minister and home minister requesting them to ensure justice to us as we are also a part of India," he said.
