A total of 1,595 Short Service Commission (SSC) officers of the Army will be benefited following the defence ministry's decision to withdraw its appeals in the Supreme Court against a ruling by an Armed Forces Tribunal.

Army sources said a total 978 male and 617 female SSC officers, commissioned before 2006, will benefit from the defence ministry's decision.

Around four years ago, an armed forces tribunal had ruled that the SSC officers commissioned before 2006 were eligible to be treated at par with those commissioned after 2006.

The defence ministry had approached the Supreme Court against the tribunal's decision. But the ministry has recently withdrawn its appeal in the apex court against the decision of the tribunal, the sources said.

The defence ministry had made certain changes for officers recruited under the Short Service Commission scheme and several benefits were not extended to officers who joined the service before 2006.
