Calling for removal of disenchantment among youth towards politics, Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar today urged them to join the political process.

She said though there is a perception among some sections of people that politics in its present form does not attract educated youth, on the contrary, it is the twin force of politics and legislative affairs that articulate our national priorities and credible strategies to reflect them in our programmes and policies.

"We should, therefore, appreciate that as politics is an effective tool to shape the future of the people, it is necessary to change this perception," she said, adding that "disenchantment among the youth towards politics should be removed as it limits their capacity to contribute purposely in the process of nation building".

She called upon the youth to join political process so that their boundless energy could be utilised in growth and prosperity of the nation.

Kumar was having an interaction with the principals and students of Delhi University and Jamia Milia Islamia in Parliament House in continuation of her outreach initiative towards reinforcing better connect between Parliament and the youth in the democratic process.

Stressing on the imperative of consolidation of democracy and democratic values across the country, Kumar said that the destiny of the nation depends upon how the youth participates and contributes in national affairs.

She also urged youngsters to be an effective channel for propagation of India's secular, inclusive and progressive image in the country and beyond its borders.

In this regard, she stressed that the youth should make every effort to carry the benefits of democracy to the poor and those who stand at the margins of the society.

About rising incidents of violence against women, Kumar said that there is an urgent need to create awareness among the people and sensitise all against such acts.
