The Tamil Nadu Assembly Monday witnessed a heated debate over the Centre rejecting two Bills passed by the State in 2017 seeking exemption from the National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test (NEET).
Leader of the Opposition, M K Stalin, said the Union government's submission in the Madras High Court that it has rejected the Tamil Nadu Assembly's bills was shocking.
Moving a call attention motion, the DMK chief said when Tamil Nadu had all along sought President's assent to two bills in both the state assembly and the two Houses of Parliament, the Centre had maintained silence.
Days ago, however, the Centre had told the court that the bills were rejected, he said.
Counsel for the Central government had submitted in the Madras High Court last week in connection with a PIL that the two bills sent by Tamil Nadu in 2017 seeking exemption from NEET have been rejected by the President (Union government).
The DMK leader sought a resolution condemning the Centre over rejection of the bills, and wanted the matter to be fought in the Supreme Court as well.
Chief Minister K Palaniswami said the next course of action would be decided after consulting legal experts.
Deputy Chief Minister and Leader of the House, O Panneerselvam said the Assembly cannot pass resolution condemning the Centre.
"The State government will consult legal experts and take a good decision," he said.
When Stalin wanted to know if the government will consider adopting a resolution persuading the Centre on the issue, Panneerselvam said the government would file a plea in the apex court following consultions with legal experts.
Law Minister C Ve Shanmugam said his department has sought a clarification from the Centre as to why the two Bills were "withheld."
A resolution condemning the Centre would not yield any result, he added.
