The North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) Tura campus, has issued suspension orders against a professor for allegedly sending a series of lewd messages to at least four students, the institute said.

The professor has been placed under suspension. The orders in this regard have been issued on Thursday," Pro V-C G S Singhaih said.

Of the four students, one came forward and lodged a complaint with the authorities, he added.

The series of messages to the victim had caused her grievous mental agony leading to her submitting a complaint to the Pro V-C for action against the guilty professor. The matter was later escalated to the V-C of NEHU in Shillong who directed the Womens Cell for action.

The case against the professor, according to university officials, bolstered further after more female students of the university came forward to give their statements against him for sending similar messages late in the night.

The investigating team took statements of the victim and other complainants while also collecting relevant evidence into the case.

A report is expected soon.
