Nepal quake toll reaches 8,460

The death toll following the devastating earthquake that hit Nepal last month has reached 8,460 with more fatalities occurring after Tuesday's powerful aftershock, the government said today.

Nepal's home ministry said it has so far recorded 8,460 deaths caused by the earthquake on April 25 and several later aftershocks across the country.

The National Emergency Operation Centre under the home ministry said that of the total death toll, 117 people were killed due to the powerful aftershock on May 12.

According to the latest update, as many as 4,571 people were injured in the April 25 quake and 1,700 others injured in the May 12 aftershock, who are undergoing treatment at different hospitals, home ministry sources said.
 

The ministry has stated that 8,399 bodies have been handed over to relatives of the deceased so far.
