Nepal's top court on Monday directed the government to take action against cattle owners who abandon their cows and oxen when they are of no use to them and left them to die on the streets.
The Supreme Court also directed the government to manage and take care of the abandoned cattle.
A bench of Justices Ananda Mohan Bhattarai and Puroshuttam Bhandari gave the ruling on a writ petition filed by an NGO Sneha's Care, which moved the court last month demanding management and safety of the abandoned domestic animals.
Cow is the national animal of Nepal.
Welcoming the court's judgement, Sneha's Care chairperson Sneh Shrestha said animal welfare can be ensured only by effective law enforcement and its effective implementation.
