Four Nepal-based labourers were killed after debris of rocks collapsed on them during a construction work on Kashapat road in Rampur area of Shimla district, police said today.

The labourers were inspecting the road last night after removing the debris when the rock suddenly caved in and all four of them were buried under it, they said.

The rescue teams reached the spot but the darkness and threat of more landslides thwarted the efforts to pull them pout, Rampur DSP Som Dutt said.

The rescue operations were resumed in the morning by the districtadministration with the help of the locals and the bodies were recovered.

The labourers were identified as Ajay (38), Ram Bahadur (40), Lokendra (40) and Harendra (22).

"We continued the rescue operations on the narrow road and also kept constant watch on the movement of rocks to avoid any major tragedy," Dutt, who supervised the rescue operations, said.

The bodies were handed over to their family members after post mortem and immediate compensation of Rs 10,000 has been given to the next of kin of each victim.
