NESO urges PM to address immigration issue in Northeast

North East Students' Organisation today urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to take urgent steps to solve the problem of illegal immigration in the region saying due to continuous influx, the indigenous people have become minorities in their homeland.

During their 15-minute meeting with the Prime Minister, the apex body of students unions of all Northeastern states also requested him not to abolish the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region as widely reported in the region.

"The Prime Minister assured the NESO delegation that government was sincere in solving the problem of the illegal immigration in the Northeast. He also assured us that the Ministry of DONER will not be abolished," NESO advisor Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharyya said in a statement.
 

The NESO delegation urged the Prime Minister to do the needful to solve region's perennial problem of floods, preference in recruitment of local eligible candidates in region's central government jobs besides others.
