The Northern Railways celebrated 'Gandhi Jayanti' today by launching a state of the art mechanised cleaning system at the New Delhi railway station.
The system, introduced on Mahatma Gandhi's birth anniversary, will now be used for comprehensive cleaning of all platforms, circulating areas and foot over-bridges in the station premises.
"The mechanised cleaning concept will raise the cleanliness standard of the station to an entirety new level and would be gradually introduced at major stations of Northern Railway within six months," said R K Kulshreshtha, General Manager, Northern Railway.

The entire station has now been divided into zones and sub-zones with earmarked supervision for proper accountability, said a Northern Railways statement.
A cleaning schedule has been stipulated for each sub- zone detailing deployment of manpower and machine for the area.
The Northern Railways has deployed 28 such machines at the station. These include battery operated vacuum sweeping machine, replacing brooms, in circulating areas and platforms. The machine which works at a speed of 6500 sq metres/hour.
A ride-on scrubber has also been provided which has a mechanised scrubber and vacuum suction to be used to clean the granite and kota stone flooring of platforms and concourse at a speed of 4800 sq metres/ hour.
The station has also got a single disc scrubber machine for stain removal for toilets, foot over-bridges and smaller areas.
Other modernised equipments provided, include vacuum cleaner and high pressure jet cleaning machine for intensive washing through ultra high pressure jets.
A battery operated cart has also been provided for transporting garbage and material out of the station.
