Scientists in the UK have designed a simple device to reduce the weight of washing machines that could save fuel and lower carbon emissions.

A regular washing machine is weighted by 25 kilogrammes of concrete to stop it from moving while on a spin cycle.

The new device designed by researchers from Nottingham Trent University in the UK is a sealable plastic container that is filled with water - but only once the machine is in place.

By replacing the concrete with empty containers, the weight of the machine is reduced by a third, 'BBC News' reported.

Researchers said that if the change became standard, it would cut the weight of trucks carrying the machines which would in turn reduce emissions.

Devised in collaboration with product design company Tochi Tech Ltd, the device was tested by Dylan Knight, an undergraduate student at the university.

"Everyone thinks the idea must have been thought of before. No one can really believe it. But I promise you it definitely works," he said.
