Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) today said its New Plate Mill rolled out 80898 tonne of plates last month by utilising 105 per cent of its capacity, which is its best ever performance.

Besides, the other units commissioned under Modernisation and Expansion also performed at or above their capacity in October 2017, a statement from RSP said.

Blast Furnace - 5 operated at the capacity of 99.6 per cent, while Sintering Plant-III performed at 102 per cent, Steel Melting Shop-II at 100 per cent and Coke Ovens Battery-6 at 103 per cent, it said.

Many new initiatives taken in the past in the areas of mill drive, leveller, water circuit, cooling bed, Double side trimming shear (DSTS), Dividing shear (DS) and auto marking system played a major role in enabling the mill to operate above its rated capacity, it said

Besides, process improvement steps like proper slab planning, conducting immediate testing along with data availability and analysis have gone a long way in achieving production records in the mill and meeting quality requirements of the customers, the release said.

Timely need based shut downs and preventive maintenance in the major units have now become the order of the day in RSP, which is helping in eliminating the chances of major breakdowns, it added.
