The three new police districts - Baruipur, Kakdwip and Diamond Harbour - in South 24-Parganas district will start functioning from tomorrow under three new SPs.

Tathagata Basu, Arijit Sinha and H Prasad are likely to be the SPs of Kakdwip, Baruipur and Diamond Harbour respectively, a source in the state secretariat said.

South 24-Parganas SP Sunil Choudhary would be in charge of monitoring and coordinating the jobs of the SPs of the three new police districts, the senior officer said.

The state government recently took the decision to create the three new police districts trifurcating South 24 Parganas. There will be a single district magistrate but the law and order of these police districts will be looked after by the three SPs.

On the reason behind the decision, the source said that with 38 police stations, it was a tough job for a single SP to control the entire district.

"The recent Bhangar incidents clearly indicated that," he said.

Among the three police districts, Diamond Harbour would be the largest with 19 police stations, Baruipur would have 10 police stations and Kakdwip is likely to have nine, the source said.
