On a day when a police report spelt out that six people were being killed daily on an average in the city, nine people lost their lives, including two brothers belonging to the Shia sect.
The brothers and a relative were gunned down in Nazimabad number seven leading to protests by members of the Shia community who came out on roads and pelted passing vehicles and burnt tyres.
The others were killed in separate firing incidents in different parts of the city which remained tense as police also reported a minor explosion in a garbage dump in Rehri Goth.
According to the police report, 2012 has turned out to be a bloody year for Karachi with many lives also lost to multiple terrorist attacks.
The report said that on a average six people were killed each day but not every killing was a target killing besides over 3,000 people injured in firing incidents with around 70 of them said to be handicapped for life.
Among those killed, 61 belonged to belonged to the Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM), 18 to Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), 19 to Awami National Party (ANP), 13 to Mohajir Qaumi Movement-Haqiqi (MQM-H) and eight to Sunni Tehreek (ST).
The report also said that sectarian violence also claimed 45 lives in 2012 including five lawyers and two doctors.
It said that 28,104 targeted operations were carried and 92 criminals killed.
A police spokesman said target killings have claimed 438 lives, while the rest were victims of personal fights and enmities.
