Newly-appointed West Bengal Transport minister Suvendu Adhikari today said the priority of his department will be to provide better services to the people.

"As this department is mainly involved in providing services to the people, I will endeavour to better the quality and bring about changes necessary for the same," Adhikari said on his first day in office.

"Changes were commenced in 2011, which are evident in better bus services, inland waterways, air-conditioned buses and also helicopter services that were introduced," Adhikari claimed.

"I will continue with the changes and try to better the services," said Adhikari, who resigned as a Lok Sabha MP following his election to the West Bengal Assembly.

Madan Mitra, who is in jail in connection with Saradha chit fund scam, was the previous minister of the department.

Adhikari, who was the backbone of Mamata Banerjee's agitation against land acquisition in Nandigram, made it clear that he would have a hands-on approach in running the transport department.

"I will ensure that people get quality service in the transport sector," he said.
