New Zealand's defence force says a New Zealand soldier was wounded during an insider attack by an Afghan soldier on the outskirts of Kabul.

The incident ended when the Afghan soldier was killed. No coalition soldiers died.

In a statement today, the defence force said the New Zealander was wounded in the foot after an Afghan soldier opened fire yesterday on a group of coalition soldiers who were leaving a meeting at an Afghan National Army building.

The defence force said an Australian soldier in the group also received a minor wound, while a second Australian soldier returned fire.

Kabul's Defence Ministry confirmed an Afghan soldier was killed during the incident.

Such insider attacks by Afghan troops, or insurgents in their uniforms, have left 15 foreign soldiers dead this year.
