Greek leftist leader Alexis Tsipras today said his government and the country faced "hard work and struggle" after he won a new mandate in a general election.

"The road of hard work and struggle lies ahead," Tsipras said in a tweet, with his Syriza party on track to grab over 35 percent of the vote against 28 per cent for the conservative New Democracy party.

Based on official results with 40 per cent of the vote counted, Syriza could end up with 149 parliamentary seats and can again partner up with the nationalist Independent Greeks party who appeared likely to muster 13 seats -- exactly the same result as in January.

The 41-year-old Tsipras was later expected to address supporters gathered outside the party headquarters in Athens, dancing and waving flags.
