A newly-elected village head of Teela Shabazpur in Loni area was today shot at by two unknown motorcycle-borne assailants, police said.

The victim has been identified as Omveer, and the incident took place at around 8:30 AM, they said.

Officiating Senior Superintendent of Police Ajay Pal Sharma said Omvir was going on foot to condole the death of a neigbour in Loni Road area near a school.

And, when he was talking to the school manager, two youths reached there on a motorcycle and engaged in heated exchanges with Omvir on some pretext and then fired two bullets at him, Sharma said.

While one bullet pierced Omvir's chest on the right side, the second one grazed his forehead, he said.

Bleeding profusely, the village head was immediately rushed to Naraendra Mohan Hospital from where he was further referred to Max Hospital in Kaushambi.

Police said, an FIR has been lodged at Loni Border Police Station against the two unknown assailants, adding, a manhunt has been launched and culprits will be nabbed soon.

Police said they are also working on the election-related enmity angle as one of the possible motives behind the incident.
