The Confederation of Newspaper and News Agency Employees' Organisations today condoled the demise of Rajkumar Manisana Singh, chairman of the 1995 wage board for journalists and non-journalists, and hailed his role in ensuring "just wages".

"The Confederation extends its condolences to the family members of Justice Manisana Singh. The Manisana Singh wage board reports in the year 2000 would remain a tribute to his memory and their findings have served to illuminate wage fixing problems for subsequent wage fixation also in the newspaper/news agency establishments," a statement released here said.

Singh, 82 had breathed his last in Imphal on January 8.

"It was to his credit that he was able to get the newspaper and newsagency finances in the country analysed thoroughly to expose the window in their budget to pay just wages and other benefits to their employees," said the statement released by M S Yadav, General Secretary of the Confederation.

It said that reports prepared under Singh's leadership were able to withstand legal challenges which in itself is a tribute to his dedication.

The Confederation consists of All India Newspaper Employees Federation, Indian Journalists Union, National Union of Journalists (I), Federation of PTI Employees' Union, UNI Workers' Union and Indian Federation for Working Journalists.
