Press Trust of India
National Fish Workers Forum (NFF) today demanded that a representative from fishermen community belonging to Puducherry be fielded for the September 28 biennial poll for the lone Rajya Sabha seat here.

Puducherry has only one seat in the Upper House and this should not be bartered away to a political bigwig from outside the Union Territory, NFF Chairman, M.Ilango, a former legislator of Puducherry, said in a release here today.

The ruling AINRC has 15 members in the 30-member House and this includes the Speaker also. An independent member from Neravy T R Pattinam in Karaikal V M C Sivakumar (a former Speaker) is supporting the government from outside.

On the opposition side, the Congress has seven members while AIADMK five and the DMK two.

The House has three nominated legislators who however do not have right to vote in the Rajya Sabha poll.
