A non-governmental organisation (NGO) here had demanded "unconditional" maternity benefits for all women provided by the Centre under the Food Safety Act.

The changes made in the Maternity Law, 1961 are benefiting women working only in organised sector, the NGO said.

"But the benefits have reduced for the poor and deprived women working in the unorganised sector, which is unacceptable," said Kavita Srivastava, the convenor of Rozi- Roti Adhikar Abhiyan.

The outfit, through Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje, has demanded that the Centre looked into the issue.

Srivastava claimed that every year nearly 13.5 lakh deliveries take place in Rajasthan, but a large section of women do not get maternity benefit.

"We oppose different benefits on different conditions to a woman on every delivery, providing financial assistance in instalments, providing maternity benefit only on live births," she said.
