Thane District Railway Passengers Association has formed a 'safety committee' to find the causes of deaths on the suburban railway network, and suggest remedial measures.
Founder president of the association Om Prakash Sharma today said, "The number of deaths on tracks on suburban network has grown year after year. Therefore, we felt the need to study its causes and suggest remedies."
The committee consists of retired government servants, including former railway employees, judges and others, he said.
"The members of the committee will visit the stations where maximum of accidents are reported," he added.
As per the latest figures, over 3,000 people died on the tracks on the Central Railway and Western Railway in 2017, Gupta said adding, "This figure needs to be brought down and precious lives need to be saved.
