If the proposed boating club and amusement park come up at the dam, the birds will cease to inhabit the place and the present bio-chain will be finished, Nature Conservation Society president Vishwarup Shah said yesterday.
He said they have brought the matter to the notice of the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) and if required, they will even approach the court to stop the amusement park from coming up at the dam, situated 10 kms from Nashik city.
The project undertaken by the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) has planned to set up water sports, musical fountains, pavilion, boating club and para gliding at the site, Shah said and feared that this would pose a problem of water pollution and birds would shy away from arriving there.
Meanwhile, when contacted MTDC MD Jagdish Patil said the state government had asked the district collector to acquire land for the purpose of adventure sport.
"The objective of developing adventure sport is to ensure that foreign tourists who come to Nashik district for wine tourism stay for a longer period. Those who come for religious tourism will not go for adventure sport or wine tourism," Patil told PTI.
He said he was unaware of opposition to this project since he is in Nagpur for the Winter Session of the state Legislature. "I will seek details," he said.
Migratory birds including flamingos, spoonbill, white stork, swans, woodpecker among others inhabit the Nandurmadhmeshwar bird sanctuary near here every year.
