The central government's decision to bar the NGO of social activist Teesta Setalvad from receiving foreign funds symbolises intolerance and is aimed at stifling dissent, CPM leader Brinda Karat said today.

"It is absolutely atrocious and we strongly condemn it," the CPM leader said reacting to the cancellation of FCRA licence to Setalvad's NGO Sabrang Trust by the Home Ministry.

She questioned why no RSS organisation is enquired into with regard to foreign funding.

"This is absolutely unwarranted. Setalvad and her colleagues have answered every single question in detail and for the Home Ministry to take such a step is nothing but a motivated action to try and stifle and silence dissent," Karat said.

"When we talk about about intolerance of this government, when we talk about the authoritarian nature of this government, this action symbolises it all," she said.

Karat said the government is afraid of anybody or any organisation who refuse to cow down to their threats.
