Expressing anger over the brutal rape of the 23-year-old paramedical student that took place on December 16, the NGO -- Bhartiya Patita Uddhar Sabha -- said flesh trade in the country should be legalised.

"It is worth mentioning that non-legalisation of the sex trade is one of reasons for more rape cases...It is ripe time for the Central government to legalise the profession of sex trade in India as has been done by 164 countries in the world," it said in a letter to the Committee.

Former Chief Justice of India J S Verma heads the three-member panel which would recommend changes in the anti-rape law.

The NGO works in the infamous G B Road area of the national capital which has over 100 brothels and more than 2,200 sex workers.
