The National Human Rights Commission today directed the Meghalaya government to redress the grievances of the people in five villages in East Jaintia Hills district.
"The authority concerned is directed to take appropriate action within 8 weeks and to inform the complainant of the action taken in the matter," NHRC registrar said in an order.
"The complaint be transmitted to the concerned authority for such action as deemed appropriate," the registrar said.

The direction followed a complaint by a law student on the plight of the 3,500 people living at Huroi, Hingari, Lailong (Hingaria), Lejri and Baskuna villages.
The complainant Kynjaimon Amse had submitted before the Commission that the villagers had no power, proper road, health centre and even clean water supply.
Amse had last month written to the Commission seeking necessary action on the matter.
