NHRC issues notice to Ajmer SSP over stripping of woman

National Human Rights Commission has issued notice to SSP Ajmer over a few police personnel allegedly stripping and assaulting a woman inside the police station in Rajasthan.

The Commission has taken suo motu cognisance of a media report that police personnel of Dargah Police Station in Ajmer "outraged the modesty" of a woman by forcibly "denuding" her inside the police station while searching for a stolen mobile phone.

She was also assaulted when no mobile phone was recovered from her possession. The victim has made a complaint to the Additional Superintendent of Police, City, Ajmer.

"The contents of the press report, if true, raise a serious issue of violation of human rights of the victim woman," the Commission observed as it issued the notice, seeking a report in this connection within two weeks.
 

According to the media report, the incident happened on November 21 when the victim, while marketing in the Dargah Bazar area, was caught by another woman for stealing her mobile phone.

Two woman constables took the victim to the police station, with one of the police personnel allegedly stripped off her clothes, made indecent comments and threatened to implicate her sister in a false case.
