NHRC issues notice to Punjab govt over newborn deaths

National Human Rights Commission today issued a notice to Punjab government over the death of newborns in a Ludhiana hospital two days ago.

According to an NHRC statement released today, it has issued a notice to the Principal Secretary, Health & Family Welfare Department, Government of Punjab calling for a report within two weeks.

The notice was issued after the Commission took suo motu cognizance of a media report that five newborns died at Mother & Child Hospital in Field Ganj, Ludhiana on November 23 due to lack of facilities.

The deaths occurred two days after the inauguration of the hospital by the Health Minister of Punjab on November 21. The hospital is a special wing for expecting mothers in the premises of Lord Mahaveer Civil Hospital.
 

The Commission has observed that the contents of the press report, if true, raise a serious issue of violation of human rights of the victim.
