The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) today issued a notice to the Uttar Pradesh Police chief, calling for a detailed report within four weeks in connection with the alleged harassment of a person, who saved the lives of two road accident victims, by Noida Police.
The move came after the NHRC took cognizance of a media report.
Ritesh Gupta, a human resource manager at a leading automotive engineering firm, saw a car hit a youth and a 11-year-old boy, who were riding a motorcycle near Noida Phase - II Police Station, and sped away, NHRC said in a statement quoting media reports.
The incident was reported on August 9. Gupta helped the victims by taking them to a hospital in his own car. Reaching the hospital, he also informed the matter to the police and the relatives of the victims.
Later, he was allegedly "harassed" by Noida police, who also detained him for around nine hours. The police also allegedly "concocted" a story claiming to have chased and nabbed Gupta and later asked him to pay Rs 10,000 as compensation to the victim's family, the statement said.
The cops also allegedly extorted Rs 2,000 from Ritesh.
