National Human Rights Commission today issued notice to SSP Bulandshahar in Uttar Pradesh in connection with a case where the three-year-old daughter of an undertrial prisoner was allegedly severely beaten up by police in court premises.

The notice was issued after NHRC took suo moto cognisance of a media report about the incident.

Giving four-week time to submit a report, the rights body has also asked authorities to inform about the disciplinary action, if any, taken against erring police officials.

According to an NHRC statement, the incident took place on May 2 when the undertrial prisoner, lodged in Bulandshahar district jail, was brought to a court in Khurja for the hearing of his case. His family had also come there.

After the hearing, seeing her father leave in police custody, the daughter started crying. Seeing this, the father could not resist himself and took her in his arms.

Reportedly, this action enraged the policemen and they allegedly forcibly took the daughter away from the undertrial and thrashed her, the statement said.

The Commission has observed that the content of the news report, if true, raises a serious issue of the violation of human rights of the child.
