The National Human Rights Commission has issued a show cause notice to the Uttar Pradesh government over the death of a newborn after falling into a dustbin while the nurses were quarrelling in the labour room and sought a report within four weeks.

"The woman was admitted to the district hospital, Mainpuri, on July 26. She was taken to the labour room around 8.00 PM when the shift of the nurses changes.

"Even as the nurses were reportedly quarrelling over who would take care of the delivery, the baby was born and fell from the table straight into the dustbin and died. The family members of the newborn alleged that the nurses were quarrelling over the issue of money," an NHRC statement said.

The Commission said it was a serious "violation" of the right to life. "Media reports indicate towards the insensitive and negligent behaviour of the nurses who are expected to ensure safety and well being of the patients," it said.

NHRC issued the notice to the Principal Secretary, Medical Health and Family Welfare department of the UP government, and asked him to submit a report on the matter within four weeks.
