The Commission had invited complaints for the open hearing, which elicited about 1,400 applications.

Of these, 571 cases were short-listed for calling reports from the authorities. These cases would be taken up during the hearing from January 28 to 30 here. The Commission has also identified 29 cases that would be taken up with the officers of state Government at a meeting in Mumbai.

The complaints are mainly about denial of benefits of social welfare schemes, police inaction, malpractices of revenue authorities, non-payment of retirement benefits, forcible dispossession from land, etc, official sources said.

On January 31, the Commission will hold a meeting with the representatives of NGOs in Mumbai, followed by a meeting of senior officers, including Maharashtra Chief Secretary and DGP.

NHRC has so far held open hearings on complaints of atrocities against scheduled castes in Odisha, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and Rajasthan.
