NHRC seeks report on cops caning women protesters in UP distt.

The National Human Rights Commission today took suo motu cognisance of a media report that some policemen were found kicking and caning women protesters in Ferozabad district, and issued a notice to the Uttar Pradesh DGP seeking a report within two weeks.

"The Commission has observed that the contents of the report, if true, amount to serious violation of dignity of women and their human rights. Accordingly, a notice has been issued to the Director General of Police, Uttar Pradesh calling for a report in the matter within two weeks," an official release issued here stated.

The women and others were protesting against the death of two persons in an accident at Rajopura village of Matsena in Ferozabad district, where policemen beat them up with sticks.
 

The Commission members came across this report in the state capital, where it is holding its three-day camp sitting.
