National Investigation Agency (NIA) has issued summons to ULFA(Independent) chairman Abhijit Asom alias Mukul Hazarika at his Kasarigaon Puranigudam residence in central Assam's Nagaon district.

NIA, Guwahati Additional Superintendent Subhasish Borooah served the summons dated September 7 through Samoguri police station to the banned ULFA(I) supremo, also known as Abhijit Barman asking him to present himself at NIA Guwahati office within September 30, police said today.

He was summoned in connection with the illegal and anti-national activities of Paresh Baruah-led ULFA(I), of which Asom had become its chairman in 2011 after Arabinda Rajkhowa was arrested.

An alumnus of RKB Higher Secondary School Puranigudam and Gauhati Medical College, Asom is reported to be a practising physician in England.

According to reports, Asom was close to ULFA(I) 'commander-in-chief' Paresh Baruah and had established a human rights organisation in 1994 through which he highlighted in UN meetings alleged human rights violation during anti-insurgency operations in Assam.
