Nicki Minaj has apologised for using the picture of African-American rights activist Malcolm X and juxtaposing it with a racial slur.
The picture which shows Malcolm X clutching a rifle was allegedly the cover art for her new song, reported E! online.
The 'Super Bass' hitmaker posted an apology to the estate of Malcolm X.
"That was never the official artwork nor is this an official single. This is a conversation. Not a single. I apologise to the Malcolm X estate if the meaning of the photo was misconstrued... I have nothing but respect (and) adoration for you," she said on her Instagram account.
Earlier, Minaj said she was inspired to use the photo as it went with the song.
"I am in the video shooting and there happened to be an iconic photo of Malcolm X ready to do the same thing for what he believed in!!!!"
Minaj was criticised on the social media for disrespecting the icon. Malcolm X was assassinated 49 years ago aged 39 years.
