In a volatile market, the NSE Nifty index ended higher by 14 points to close at 7,512.55 on mild buying mainly in IT and FMCG sectors despite selling in banking, auto, pharma and realty stocks.
The Nifty opened higher at 7,557.40 and firmed up further to 7,585.30 on initial buying on the back of fresh foreign capital inflows coupled with higher global cues after the Federal Reserve signalled a slower pace of interest-rate hike this year.
However, the Nifty dropped afterwards to 7,479.40 on profit-booking before ending at 7,512.55, showing a marginal gain of 13.80 points or 0.18 per cent.

Among the major indices, IT rose by 1.11 per cent and FMCG by 0.56 per cent while while pharma fell by 1.36 per cent, realty by 0.95 per cent, finance services 0.29 per cent and banking by 0.11 per cent.
Major gainers were Ambuja cement (5.80 pc), BPCL (5.68 pc),
Tata Chem (4.50 pc), BHEL (4.23 pc) and Gail (4.00 pc).
However, Lupil fell by 4.34 pc, HDFC 1.59 pc, Cipla 1.21 pc, Tata Steel 1.20 pc and HDFC Bank 1.17 pc.
Turnover in cash segment rose to Rs 17,584.03 crore from 14,529.09 crore yesterday. A total of 9,394.49 lakh shares changed hands in 80,01,175 trades.
The market capitalisation of NSE stood at Rs 90,09,834 crore.
