Domestic bourses remained volatile for the second day today with bouts of gains and losses ahead of November contracts expiry tomorrow, as the CNX Nifty ended almost flat, by merely two points down.

The market was mostly lustreless amidst caution, as investors opted to book profits as well as cover long positions ahead of the expiry of futures and options.

Brokers had expected the quarterly GDP data to be due on Friday.

Buying was mainly led by FMCG, auto and metal sectors, while selling incurred in IT, pharma, energy and bank counters.

The 50-scrip Nifty hovered between a high of 6,074 points and low of 6,030.30 points before settling at 6,057.10 points, showing a loss of merely two points, or 0.03 per cent, over the last close.

The market opened with gains, but soon volatility infleunced trading sentiments, with alternate bouts of gains and losses during early sessions. The afternoon trading session saw buying in select counters, though momentum fizzled out during the end session.

Losers were JP Associates, PowerGrid, Bharti Airtel, DLF, NTPC, SBIL, Lupin, Cipla, IDFC and Wipro, while gainers were Tata Motors, BPCL, Grasim, UltraCemCo, Axis Bank, Tata Steel, Coal India, ITC, ONGC and Bank of Baroda.

The turnover in cash segment dropped to Rs 9,870.98 crore from the previous Rs 15,506.11 crore. A total of 5,059.04 lakh shares changed hands in 52,64,867 trades, while market capitalisation stood at Rs 65,24,634 crore.
