Nifty ends May F&O series above 8k mark, up 135 pts

The benchmark Nifty reclaimed the 8,000-level today by closing 135 points higher at 8,069.65 points, following across the board buying on the back of higher global cues.

Nifty crossed the resistance of 7,974 mark and continued to inch up higher on positive momentum, touching an intra-day high of 8,083.

Asian stocks ruled higher as gains in crude oil prices boosted investors' risk appetite, while European stocks witnessed a mixed trend.

Energy and materials sector stocks led gains in US markets in overnight trade, following a jump in crude oil prices triggered by a weekly report showing a decline in US crude inventories.
 

The 50-share Nifty resumed higher at 7,974.45 and moved in a range of 8,083.00 and 7,948.50 before ending at 8,069.65, showing a gain of 134.75 points or 1.70 per cent.

On the sectoral front, Infra rose by 4.57 per cent, followed by PSU Bank (3.66 per cent), Realty (2.18 per cent), Bank (2.13 per cent), Private Bank (2.05 per cent), FMCG (1.36 per cent), Auto (1.23 per cent), IT (1.08 per cent) and Metal (0.98 per cent).

However, Pharma eased by 0.24 per cent.

Index gainers included L&T (14.13 per cent), SBI (5.17 per cent), BHEL (4.94 per cent), Idea (3.88 per cent), Axis Bank (3.36 per cent), Kotak Bank (2.98 per cent), Yes Bank (2.63 per cent), Infosys (2.42 per cent) and Hindalco (2.20 per cent).

Bharti Infratel fell 1.79 per cent while HCL Tech declined 1.13 per cent.

A total of 845 shares advanced, 577 fell, while 74 ruled steady.

Turnover in cash segment rose to Rs 23,317.57 crore from Rs 16,673.79 crore previously. A total of 11,545.56 lakh shares changed hands in 87,09,285 trades.

The market capitalisation of NSE stood at Rs 96,18,226 crore.
