Benchmark Nifty scaled a fresh high on the last day of October series derivatives expiry, rising by 48 points to 10,343.80 on strong buying in metal, pharma, energy, media and infra counters.
Globally, European stocks edged higher as investors digested new earnings reports ahead of a speech by European Central Bank (ECB) President Mario Draghi.
Asian stocks were mixed after Wall Street pulled back from record highs overnight.

It saw an intra-day movement of about 83.80 points.
On the sectoral front, Metal rose 2.14 per cent, Pharma 1.05 per cent, Energy 1.01 per cent, Media 0.95 per cent, Auto 0.58 per cent, Infra 0.51 per cent and Realty 0.40 per cent.
However, PSU Bank, IT and FMCG fell by 1.02 per cent, 0.75 per cent and 0.02 per cent, respectively.
Major index gainers were BPCL, HPCL, IOC, Cipla and Maruti.
Losers included HCL Tech, ICICI Bank, Indiabulls Housing Finance, Ambuja Cement and Power Grid.
The Nifty Midcap and Smallcap indices advanced 0.74 per cent and 0.54 per cent, respectively.
The market breadth, indicating the overall health of the market, was in favour of gainers. On the NSE, 922 stocks advanced, 801 declined and 60 remained unchanged.
Total securities that hit their price bands were 157.
Turnover in the cash segment fell to Rs 52,070.09 crore from Rs 55,954.18 crore yesterday.
A total of 24,138.27 lakh shares changed hands in 13,701,754 trades. The market capitalisation of listed firms on NSE stood at Rs 1,40,96,806 crore.
