NSE benchmark Nifty rose for the fourth straight day today to end at a fresh lifetime high of 10,966.20 on sustained buying amid mixed global cues.

Opening gap-up, the Nifty soon turned choppy for a brief period due to profit-booking. However, it regained momentum as funds and FIIs got into act, underpinned by a string of positive corporate results and slew of recent government measures including GST cut.

Overseas, European stocks were trading mixed. Asian stocks settled higher, shrugging off the US government shutdown.

The Nifty 50 index climbed 71.50 pts or 0.66 percent to close at 10,966.20, a record closing high.

It saw an intra-day movement of about 93.70 points.

On the sectoral front, IT rose by 2.07 per cent, Energy 1.99 per cent, Realty 1.91 per cent, Private Bank 0.70 per cent, Infra 0.57 per cent, Media 0.51 per cent, Bank 0.49 per cent, FMCG 0.33 per cent, Pharma 0.18 per cent, Finance Service 0.18 per cent and Auto 0.11 per cent.

However, Metal and PSU Bank fell.

Major index gainers were TCS, RIL, Indiabulls Housing Finance, ONGC, Axis Bank, Tech Mahindra, Yes Bank, L&T and Bajaj Auto.

Losers included HPCL, GAIL, Wipro, HDFC, BPCL, Bharti Airtel, Eicher Motors, Vedanta and Asian Paints.

The market breadth, indicating its overall health, was in favour of gainers. On the NSE, 983 stocks advanced, 799 declined and 70 remained unchanged.

Total securities that hit their price bands were 215.

Turnover in the cash segment rose to Rs 35,915.33 crore from Rs 33,320.51 crore as on Friday.

A total of 16,329.57 lakh shares changed hands in 11,521,053 trades. The market capitalisation of listed firms on the NSE stood at Rs 1,53,53,879.56 crore.
