Nifty snaps 7-day loss, flirts with 8,000-mark

Snapping its seven-session losing streak, the NSE Nifty today gained 7 points to 7,985.75 but failed to hold the 8000-mark, following late bout of buying in infra, energy, auto and finance service sectors.

On the other hand, realty, FMCG, technology and pharma stocks were under pressure.

Overseas, Asian stocks closed on mixed note. The Shanghai Composite index dropped 1 per cent, Hong Kong's Hang Seng and Nikkei 225 index closed lower.

In Europe, the FTSE 100 was trading marginally lower. DAX and the CAC 40 were trading in green.

Back home, the Nifty opened lower at 7,972.50 and moved in a range of 8,022.60 and 7,942.05 before ending at 7,985.75, showing a modest fall of 6.65 points or 0.08 pct.
 

It saw an intra-day movement of about 80.55 points.

On the sectoral front, infra 0.58 per cent, followed by energy (0.30 per cent), auto (0.29 per cent), finance service (0.22 per cent) and media (0.05 per cent).

While, realty fell by 1.29 per cent, IT 0.90 per cent, FMCG 0.80 per cent, pharma 0.68 per cent, PSU bank 0.37 per cent and metal 0.28 per cent.

Major index gainers were Cipla (3.72 per cent), Bosch Ltd (2.50 per cent), Maruti (2.22 per cent), Sun Pharma (2.36 per cent), Bajaj Auto (2.13 pct) and Larsen (1.93 per cent).

The laggards included Axis Bank (2.11 per cent), HCL Tech (2.86 per cent), Eicher Motor (1.80 per cent), AuroPharma (1.74 per cent), TechM (1.45 per cent) and Hindalco (1.33 per cent).

A total of 867 scrips declined 738 advanced while 82 remained unchanged. Total securities that hit their price bands were 111.

Turnover in the cash segment rose to Rs 15,265.82 crs from Rs 13,533.63 crore as on Thursday.

A total of 7,302.97 lakh shares changed hands in 6,815,658 trades. The market capitalisation of NSE stood at Rs 10,209,886.48 crore.
