A Nigerian national was arrested in connection with a cyber fraud which caused loss of Rs 12 lakh a Jharkhand businessman in East Singhbhum district.

Senior Superintendent of Police here, Anoop T Mathew said the 33-year-old arrested foreigner, Onumajaru Chukwudi, a resident of Kano, Nigeria, was picked up from Navi Mumbai and brought here today.

Mathew, who was flanked by the Superintendent of Police (city) Chandan Kumar Jha and Deputy Superintendent of Police B N Singh, said Chukwudi alias James Bennett was arrested on the basis of a complaint by Manoj Kumar, a resident of Adityapur in Seraikela-Kharswan district.

Chukwudi, who impersonated himself as Nanca Piergiorigio, Secretary of a purported UK-based pharma company, offered Kumar supply of herbal product and earn four/five times more profit through e-mail.

In July last, the Nigerian national placed order and asked Kumar to procure the herbal product from one Vijay Mahesh of Mahesh Herbal Company, Wasi, Navi Mumbai and supply to his company.

Piergiorigio, who visited Ranchi and introduced himself as James Bannett, Purchase Manager of Advancis Medical Limited, had even okayed the sample of product after he met Kumar at Ranchi airport on July 24 and asked Kumar to inform him after procuring 50 packets of herbal product from Mahesh Herbal.

Accordingly, Kumar procured the herbal product worth Rs 12 lakh and informed Bennett on his mobile number as instructed by the latter, Mathew said.

As Bennett started delaying to make payment to Kumar and pressurised him to send more sample of the product, Kumar smelt a rat and approached Bistupur police station and registered a complaint on August 21.
