Nigerian held for fraud

A 41-year-old Nigerian was

arrested here for allegedly cheating a former professor of the prestigious Banaras Hindu University of Rs 25 lakh on the pretext of inheriting USD 18 million in Africa, police said today.

The arrested has been identified as Peter Uche (41). The arrest came following investigations into a complaint that Prof B N Pandey was cheated of Rs 25 lakh.

In an email to Pandey, a man claiming to be an official of Bank of Africa informed him that a German citizen has deposited USD 18 million for him and to inherit it, he has to pay money for transfer.
 

"For the last one year or so, as per the various directions received by email and telephones, Pandey kept on depositing money in different bank accounts to the tune of Rs 25 lakh," Ravindra Yadav Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime), said.

His son, who came to know about the racket, approached police.

During investigation, it came to light that Uche was allegedly demanding another Rs one lakh for stamp duty.

"Uche was told that the money cannot be put in account and he has to collect the cash. He fell in the trap and was apprehended when he came to collect the money," Yadav said.
